The United Kingdom is home to a vast third sector, in which the opportunities to volunteer for free are extensive. Not only does volunteering come in the usual form (e.g. helping at a homeless shelter), many new posts which are skills specific have emerged, such as web design.
Recent Government policy has promoted the utilization of the voluntary sector, which has been coined by the UK Prime Minister as 'The Big Society'. Whilst this is a dreadful position for those who have lost their jobs, the merger and importance of this sector is evident. Volunteering in the UK is fast becoming the new 'internship' or 'work-experience' that the private sector and government agencies have failed to provide.
